Recommended Action
Adopt a resolution approving the Roadway Designation of a portion of U.S. 19A between Tarpon Avenue and the Pasco County Line as the “Officer Charles ‘Charlie K’ Kondek Jr., Memorial Highway”, and additionally requesting the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to create, place, and maintain the designated roadway markers.
It is further recommended the Clerk of the Circuit Court be authorized to record this resolution in the public records of the County.

Summary:
With the adoption of this resolution, the Board of County Commissioners provides its support to the renaming of this portion of I-375, and additionally requests the FDOT to create, place, and maintain the designated roadway markers.
Section 334.071(3), Florida Statutes, requires support through the passage of a resolution from any city or county commission whose jurisdiction the roadway crosses.
Background Information:
Officer Charles Kondek was a highly regarded 17 year veteran of the Tarpon Springs Police Department. On December 21, 2014, Officer Kondek responded to a nuisance call when he was fatally wounded by an armed felon.
Florida Representatives Chris Sprowls and Jim Boyd, and the State Legislature successfully passed House Bill 1169, which honors Officer Kondek with this Roadway Designation.
