Resolution supporting the honorary Roadway Designation of a portion of S.R. 580 as the “Senator Gerald S. ‘Jerry’ Rehm Highway.”

Recommended Action:

Recommended Action

Adopt a resolution approving the Roadway Designation of a portion of S.R. 580 as the “Senator Gerald S. ‘Jerry’ Rehm Highway”, and additionally requesting the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to create, place, and maintain the designated roadway markers.

It is further recommended the Clerk of the Circuit Court be authorized to record this resolution in the public records of the County.

Summary:

With the adoption of this resolution, the Board of County Commissioners provides its support to the renaming of this portion of S.R. 580 as the “Senator Gerald S. ‘Jerry’ Rehm Highway”, and additionally requests the FDOT to create, place, and maintain the designated roadway markers. 

Section 334.071(3), Florida Statutes, requires support through the passage of a resolution from any city or county commission whose jurisdiction the roadway crosses.

 

Background Information:

Senator Gerald S. Rehm’s career consisted of nearly 30 years of public service, beginning as a Dunedin City Commissioner and then elected as Mayor for the City of Dunedin.  He later served in the Florida Legislature as a member of the House of Representatives and the State Senate.

Some of Senator Gerald S. Rehm’s greatest contributions to his community were the acquisition and development of Caladesi Island for the designation of a state park, obtaining funding for the widening of S.R. 580, and the acquisition of land which is now home to the Dunedin Community Center.

During the 2017 Legislative Session, Senate Bill 368 was successfully passed, in which Senator Rehm was honored for his service through this Roadway Designation.
