Recommended Action

Approval of the Municipal Services Taxing Unit funding request, in the amount not to exceed $20,000.00, for the Tierra Verde Community Association (TVCA) for repairs to playground equipment located at the Tierra Verde Recreational Facility.

The playground was constructed in 2003 and funded through a County grant in the amount of $50,000.00, with the TVCA funding the remaining $22,500.00.

The playground has exceeded its useful life of 15 years and requires extensive repairs to meet the County’s safety requirements.

The total cost for the repairs is $25,075.76 and the TVCA will fund the remaining $5,075.76.

The repairs are expected to extend the useful life of the playground for 4-5 years.

Summary:

Summary

The Tierra Verde Community Association (TVCA) manages the county-owned Tierra Verde Recreation Complex, which includes a playground, baseball field, and tennis and pickleball courts. The playground equipment has exceeded its useful life, and significant safety concerns have been identified by the County’s Risk Management Department.

The cost to repair the playground equipment is $25,075.76. This MSTU grant would cover $20,000, and the TVCA would pay the remaining $5,075.76. These repairs are expected to extend the useful life of the playground for an additional 4-5 years. The full replacement of the playground will be added to Parks and Conservation Resources Department’s playground replacement schedule.

Body

Background Information:

In 2003 the TVCA applied for a recreational grant funding from the County to install a playground at the Tierra Verde Recreation Complex. The County awarded TVCA $50,000 for the project. The TVCA contributed an additional $22,500 to cover the remaining cost of the $72,500 playground.

The useful life of these playgrounds is approximately 15 years. The existing playground has been in use for 18 years and significant safety concerns have been identified and documented by Risk Management. The repairs will extend the useful life of the equipment 4-5 years. Replacement of the equipment will be added to the Parks and Conservation Resources playground equipment replacement cycle.

Fiscal Impact:

This request for funding in the amount of $20,000.00 is a one-time expenditure of budgeted MSTU Special Projects funds. Funding is included in the General Government MSTU cost center within the General Fund and is consistent with amounts provided during FY22 budget development.
