Approval by the County Administrator of the grant application and related documents for the Bureau of Justice Assistance STOP School Violence Prevention and Mental Health training program:
• The funding will be utilized to implement the Pinellas Prevention and Mental Health Training Program, Project SSAVE, to reduce violent crime through the creation of school safety training and mental health programs for school personnel and students.
• The STOP School Violence Prevention and Mental Health Training Program provides $500,000.00 for a 36 month period.
• There is no match or cost sharing requirements.

Summary:
The STOP School Violence Act is designed to improve school security by providing students and teachers with the tools they need to quickly recognize and respond to violent attacks, mitigate risk exposure, and prevent acts of violence. It provides funding to state, local, and Indian tribal governments to develop threat assessment and crisis intervention teams and anonymous reporting systems designed to identify threats before they materialize, including those that originate from individuals with mental health issues; and for educating students, and training school personnel, and local law enforcement officers so that they can partner in preventing violent events from happening.
Background/Explanation:
The Pinellas County School Board is applying for $499,363.18 federal funds under the BJA STOP School Violence Prevention and Mental Health Training Program. The Pinellas Prevention and Mental Health Training Program, Project SSAVE, was designed to reduce violent crime through the creation of school safety training and mental health programs for school personnel and students. SSAVE stands for Students and Staff Against Violence Everywhere. Project SSAVE will meet Pinellas needs regarding the prevention of school violence.
Fiscal Impact:
The STOP School Violence Prevention and Mental Health Training Program will provide $500,000.00 for a 36-month period. There are no match or cost-sharing requirements. The grant is not included in the FY20 budget request, but may be added before budget adoption if awarded.

Authority for the County Administrator to sign this grant application is granted under Code Section 2-62 (a)(4).
