Summary:

This ordinance revision will provide for the removal of backing into parking spaces as prohibitive.

Background Information:

An ordinance developed in 1979 and amended in 2005 prohibited vehicles from backing into a parking spot. This prohibition applies to all areas of the County (incorporated and unincorporated).  Recent enforcement activities highlighted the need to review this ordinance in more detail, as several recent parking fines resulting from this issue were dismissed.

County staff has determined that backing into parking spaces will not compromise public safety or orderly traffic flow and recommends the repeal of the exclusion.

The Pinellas County Sheriff has also advised that there is no essential law enforcement purpose to prohibiting cars being backed into parking spaces and has no objection to the ordinance being rescinded.
