Summary:

The Emergency Medical Services Authority (Authority) and the City of Clearwater wish to partner to improve and expand water rescue capabilities along the waters in and around Pinellas County.

Background Information:

The cities and Fire Districts have provided various levels of water rescue through their Fire Rescue departments since their inception. Throughout that time, the fire agencies have worked closely with law enforcement, the US Coast Guard, and Florida Fish & Wildlife.

The City of Clearwater is purchasing a rescue boat and will be able to acquire a larger and more capable craft through the funding support from the Authority.  The City will respond to water rescue emergencies and assist citizens in waters in and around the County, as well as provided closest unit coverage in accordance with the automatic aid agreement.

Fiscal Impact:

This represents a one-time expenditure of $250,000.00 to supplement the City’s purchase of a $650,000.00 rescue boat.

The expenditure is included in the Fiscal Year 2017 Adopted Budget for the Emergency Medical Services Fund.

The City will own, maintain, and operate the boat at its own expense for the safe useful life of the boat.
