Recommended Action:

Recommended Action

Adopt a resolution approving the Roadway Designation of a portion of S.R. 60 between the Hillsborough County Line and Mandalay Avenue as the “Purple Heart Trail”, and additionally requesting the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to create, place, and maintain the designated roadway markers.

It is further recommended the Clerk of the Circuit Court be authorized to record this resolution in the public records of the County.

Summary:

With the adoption of this resolution, the Board of County Commissioners provides its support to the renaming of this portion of S.R. 60 as the “Purple Heart Trail”, and additionally requests the FDOT to create, place, and maintain the designated roadway markers. 

The County is requesting that FDOT place appropriate markers for this designation at the following sites:  Florida Veterans Memorial Plaza at Crest Lake Park, Hillsborough/Pinellas County line along the Courtney Campbell Causeway, and Mandalay Avenue within the City of Clearwater.

Section 334.071(3), Florida Statutes, requires support through the passage of a resolution from any city or county commission whose jurisdiction the roadway crosses.

 

Background Information:

The Purple Heart Trail was established in 1992 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart to be a symbolic trail throughout all 50 states to commemorate and honor all men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

During the 2017 Legislative Session, Senate Bill 368 was successfully passed in which the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal were honored for their service through this Roadway Designation.
