Approval and execution by the County Administrator of the grant award with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for the 2024 Paul Coverdell Forensic Sciences Improvement Formula grant program.

 

                     The Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Formula program funds projects to help improve the timeliness and quality of forensic science and medical examiner services.

                     Formula funds will be used by the Pinellas County Forensic Laboratory to purchase supplies and equipment to improve efficiency and maintain operation of the Pinellas County Forensic Laboratory.

                     Formula funding in the amount of $72,126.85 is available for the 21-month grant period of 10/1/2024 - 6/30/2026 for Pinellas County under the Coverdell Formula grant. This is an increase from the $57,867.71 anticipated at the time of application.

Summary:

The Coverdell Grant Formula Program will provide federal grant dollars to purchase supplies and equipment for the Medical Examiner’s Pinellas County Forensic Laboratory to increase efficiency and forensic capabilities.

 

Background/Explanation:

The Coverdell Grant Formula Program awards grants to States and units of local government to carry out all or a substantial part of a program intended to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science or medical examiner/coroner services in the state, including those services provided by laboratories operated by the state and those operated by units of local government within the state. The Coverdell Grant Program awards formula funds to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) who pass through funding for the Medical Examiner’s Pinellas County Forensic Laboratory

 

Fiscal Impact:

Formula funding in the amount of $72,126.85 is available for the 21-month grant period of 10/1/2024 - 6/30/2026 for Pinellas County under the Coverdell Formula Grant. This is an increase from the $57,867.71 anticipated at the time of application. No match is required.

Authority for the County Administrator to approve this grant award is granted under Code Section 2-62 (a)(1).
