There are approximately 949,827 residents in Pinellas County with an estimated 23.4% residents reported to be 65 years old or older (US Census Bureau Population Estimates July 2015).  Pinellas County strives to model the successful AARP Age Friendly Program which utilizes the concepts of the World Health Organization’s eight (8) Domains of Livability, created with the intended outcomes of promoting communities where individuals can live, work, and play in their neighborhoods for as long as they desire.

World Health Organization’s 8 Domains of Livability:
Domain 1:  Outdoor Spaces & Buildings
Domain 2:  Transportation
Domain 3:  Housing
Domain 4:  Social Participation
Domain 5:  Respect and Social Inclusion
Domain 6:  Civic Participation and Employment
Domain 7:  Communication and Information
Domain 8:  Community & Health Services

Several outcomes are expected to occur in being designated as an Age Friendly County including:  increasing partnerships, increasing knowledge of services among our elderly, promoting the integration of services, as well as identifying, mapping and coordinating available resources.

Background Information:

The AARP Age Friendly Network is a model that highlights a diverse range of physical, behavioral, and social programs to allow for individuals to remain in their homes or neighborhoods as long as possible.  The Age Friendly Pinellas County Initiative encompasses a variety of departments including Human Services, Marketing & Communications, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, Airport, Parks & Preserves, Planning, Building Services, Extension Office, Utilities, and Animal Services.  Human Services will lead the County in facilitating this initiative while each department will develop a Champion to ensure this important work is accomplished.

In early Spring 2016, Human Services developed an Age Friendly Doing Things Model and blueprint, in addition to facilitating a number of focus groups in Senior Centers in Dunedin, St. Petersburg, Gulfport, and Pinellas Park.

In May 2016, Human Services hosted a kick-off meeting with representatives from each of the Board of County Commissioner’s Departments to engage in dialogue specific to the eight (8) domains and their potential role.

In August 2016, Human Services in concert with Marketing & Communications launched the Senior Connections website, an on-line resource of programs and services important to the aging population and caregivers.

In September 2016, Human Services hosted an Age Friendly Symposium with 90+ community stakeholders and received interest from 30+ partners to assist with the effort.
