Body
Background Information:
Pinellas County recognized the need for additional hurricane shelter spacing in an After-Action Review post Hurricane Irma. An internal study was conducted to determine how to best utilize current facilities to expand the capacity and/or update these locations to meet the specifications and minimum safety standards for a hurricane shelter designation. In coordination with the Pinellas County School Board, Pinellas County Emergency Management identified and obtained preliminary estimates for hardening nine facilities for a cost of $1,568,373.00. These upgrades will add an additional 4,026 shelter spaces at 20 feet per person and 691 Special Needs shelter spaces at 40 square feet per person. This will also increase our pet sheltering capacity.
Fiscal Impact:
The agreement and scope of work provide Capital Improvement Program funding to the Pinellas County School Board in the amount not to exceed $1,568,373.00. This funding is located under the FY21 Adopted Budget under CIP Program Emergency Sheltering project #004180A.
All completed retrofit enhancements occurring from this project funding will be the responsibility of the Pinellas County School Board for recurring maintenance as needed.
Future additional funds may be necessary if additional unforeseen items or increases in construction costs from the time of quote are determined or presented during actual construction. Total funding for these projects within FY21 will not exceed the total FY21 CIP budget amount of $1,785,000.00.
