Summary

On January 22, 2026, Pinellas County Animal Services received a call for service from Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office advising that an animal had sustained multiple injuries from being thrown from a moving vehicle on 66th street.  The dog was evaluated at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care Center where it was determined that she sustained multiple injuries, and the owner refused all medical treatment at that time.  Upon arrival at the animal hospital, Officer Weitz noticed the dog identified as “Princess” had severe bruising on her head.  At this time, Officer Weitz seized the animal and transported her to Pinellas County Animal Services.  The animal seized is identified as follows: A0060148128, Princess, a long-haired black and white Chihuahua.

In accordance with §828.073, Florida Statutes, a petition must be filed in County Court within ten (10) days after an animal seizure.  Due to the time restraints set by law, approval to initiate litigation from the Board of County Commissioner’s Chair was sought and received pursuant to Resolution No. 21-23.

On January 30, 2026, Pinellas County filed an action to take custody and ownership of the animal and to enjoin the defendant from owning animals or, in the alternative, for the Court to enter an Order to Provide Care for the animal.

This item is now being brought to the County Commission for ratification, consistent with Resolution No. 21-23.
