Summary:

Grant application with the TBRPC requesting $6,762.80 for 1,000 storm drain markers, product-specific adhesive, and 1,500 educational doorhangers. The purpose of this grant application is to fund storm drain placards, product-specific adhesive, and educational doorhangers for the purpose of marking storm drains throughout the County. The storm drain marker messaging is intended to educate and inform the public and reduce the amount of stormwater pollution (i.e. trash, sediment, pet waste and grass clippings) entering local waters via roadside storm drains, thereby improving water quality.

Background/Explanation:

The County supports citizen volunteer efforts countywide to address water quality issues that have no jurisdictional boundaries. The grant funded products allow for distribution throughout the County. These materials will supplement long-standing volunteer projects and replenish supplies.

The placards, adhesive, and doorhangers are provided in a storm drain marking kit.  The placards identify the nearest waterbody which receives stormwater runoff from a particular storm drain (i.e. drains to lake, drains to Tampa Bay, drains to the Gulf). The doorhangers provide tips to property owners on how they can prevent stormwater pollution (i.e. picking up pet waste, blowing grass clippings back on the lawn).

Fiscal Impact:

This Grant Application for $6,762.80 is to purchase materials for storm drain marking throughout the County.

Funding of $5,000 for this amendment is included in the current year budget of Public Works in the Surface Water Utility Fund. Expenditures are expected to be reimbursed by the grant and/or Public Works is able to absorb costs in this fund due to lapse savings.
